yeah, this thread has generated some serious replies.

I first heard Keith on Wayne Krantz's Greenwich Mean Disc. I really really liked it. Tunes were not as strong as his previous discs but that was his intent and Keith was TOTALLY different than anyone I had heard personally.

Saw him live in Oakland a few months later. Impressed but not as much as I had been with the disc. Then caught him at the Baked Potato maybe a year later? Was TOTALLY blown away and it just reinforced my love for his playing and his approach.

So, either the first night was an off night for them, or it just took me a couple tries to "get" it.

I've spoken with some people on this forum in person about Keith and they've admitted that one of the problems is Keith basically takes everything we know and love about Vinnie, Weckl, Dennis etc and throws it off a high building. There's really nothing of those guys in his playing anymore. (supposedly there used to be; I never heard him back then but I bet it was interesting to hear the changeover)

Bottom line to me, great player who's managed to stay unique in a world where (to quote Bill Bruford) "drummers are starting to morph into the same player." No easy feat. Who cares who's "better" than him? All that matters is if you like the music he makes. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img]

In a world of so many clones, I think DDF nailed it...KC's playing is kind of like a breath of fresh air...I don't have to rack the brain too hard on some heavy sh** that's going by [a la Virg, VC, Gratton, Minnemann [img]wink.gif[/img] - not saying that KC doesnt do some cool & hip phrasings & accentuations], yet KC still has some exceptional technique & nice time/groove & the phrasings are there...know wuddah mean? He doesnt have to play a bunch of "heavy drumistic sh**" to impress you at the expense of the groove, dig? [Not that those other greats cant either]... ;c)

KC doesnt feel to me to be occupied w the necessity to play some hip drum sh** for us drummers; he's just groovin' hard & being hip, man...but not TOO "hip" [for all you darn drummers out there!] ;cP

It indeed doesnt sound like he's trying to clone any of the greats, which is kinda refreshing...got his "own thang goin' on"...he's just playing & letting the groove & music dictate where he goes w it. He sounds like, well, Keith Carlock. He may be no DiCenso, but i dont see how what he did on the 2 Noy mp3s that i heard couldve necessarily been played "any better" by DiC or any of the other greats...maybe more "drumistically hip," but I dont know...& that's really not the point anyway, is it... It still finds me tappin my foot & swayin my head...

BTW, IMHO, Soph is a jazz drummer...he may not be quite as heavy as say Tain, but still nevertheless...
And since we're on that kind of thought / semantics, I dont think Hass is THE greatest "swinger" either...phenomenal all-around & fusion-of-styles drummer, PERIOD, but i dont think the guy can swing like Tain or Elvin or Hamilton...he has that "contempo swing" feel to his playing, maybe not so as say VC or DW, but nevertheless...now maybe he can "swing more than" KC, but i dont know...
But he's still a great player...

My fave players are still VC, DW, DD, VD, DC, GN, OH, SG, JP, PE, GH, CW, RG, WK, HH, AS, JH, BStew, Tain, Hass, etc etc...[see if you can guess some of the initials, & waste time doing so!]

I can't hear any major influences in his playing. To me, he's what I would call a total stylist. The fact that he is young and that he gets those big exposure gigs with his unique sound, technique, kit setup and body movement, will generate (I think) a bunch of KC clones in a future not so far.

What is considered bizarre today might be the norm tomorrow.
